Castle Rock (Kansas)

Castle RockCastle Rock is a large limestone pillar in Gove County, Kansas reaching nearly 70 feet tall, within the Smoky Hills region.

Description
Castle Rock was a landmark on the Butterfield Overland Despatch route (Overland Trail). The chalk was deposited in the area by an ancient inland sea. The formation was formed by the weathering of the chalk by wind and water. It received its name because it is said to look like a castle rising above the prairie. The formation may last only a few more years. Weathering of the rock formation is increasing due to visitors climbing on the rocks. The tallest spire fell following a thunderstorm in 2001. The formation and the nearby badlands are located about 14 miles south of I-70 near Quinter, Kansas.

On January 29, 2008, Castle Rock and Monument Rocks were jointly named as one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas.

Kansas Plains, Quinter, KS I cannot think of a place that holds more history for me than Quinter. My father was born there. Born to a mother of 16 yrs old and a Old Order Church member, father 11 yrs her senior. Much of what holds meaning to me still resides in the lore of the county. And Yes it is part of "Tornado Alley". As a young man of 19 I was a newlywed living and working on a farm. I was driving farm trucks and tractors, and milking cows. That land is in my blood and the memories in my long since fallen tears. Even now as I look back twenty years have come and gone but those days are still with me in every breath I take.

So many times I've heard "Once I was young, now I have grown Old" I am not yet the "old" but I do find myself giving thought to the well worn paths, many traveled alone. Alone almost seems like a choice or frame of mind that we can allow. I have allowed you to enter a small segment of my life and mind, now I invite you to my table. I found it necessary to review my life and look at how to welcome more people. I am glad you visited here.

Walking and you - what is a health walk?

The short definition of a health walk is: "a purposeful, brisk walk undertaken on a regular basis" and it can include any walk which is specifically designed and carried out for the purpose of improving an individual's health.

With regard to cardiovascular health, the walk should be purposeful and 'brisk' (in other words more than just a stroll). Moreover it is a structured or semi-structured activity which is carried out on a regular basis as part of an individual's exercise regime.

Walking (without the 'health' bit) is a healthy activity in so far as any energy expenditure has health benefits, regardless of intensity.

In addition to this, organised walks (brisk or not) can have a health impact on individuals by providing an opportunity to socialise (good social networks enhance health) and a distraction from everyday stresses (stress contributes to poor health).

It is the relevant intensity of the walk for the individual and the regularity of participation that can really have an impact on heart health.

Health Benefits for Runners
Running is one of the best activities most people can do to improve their health. Running regularly can help with weight loss, fighting aging and disease, and with generally staying healthy.

Many people start running in order to win the battle of the bulge. Whether they are obese or just want to lose that last five pounds, or even if they just want to stay at the weight they are at, approximately 60% of runners start running to manage their weight. Running is one of the top activities for burning fat. In fact, with the exception of cross country skiing, running burns more calories per minute than any other form of cardiovascular exercise.

Running regularly also has been proven to help fight the aging process. It prevents muscle and bone loss that often occur with age. Our bones are made to accommodate the demands placed upon them. By sitting at a computer all day many of us allow our bones to grow weaker, but by running regularly our skeleton gets the demand it needs to stay healthy. In addition to keep our insides from aging quickly, regular, high-intensity exercise, like running, has also been proven to promote the human growth hormone, which celebrities have taken injections of for years to keep them looking young.

Amazingly running also helps to fight disease. Running reduces the risk of stroke and breast cancer. Regular running has become a treatment option for doctors to prescribe to patients who are at a high risk, or early stages, of osteoporosis, diabetes, and hypertension. It reduces the risk of heart attacks, by strengthening the heart and lowering blood pressure. Running lowers blood pressure and maintains the elasticity of arteries incredibly well because as you run your arteries expand and contract nearly three times as much as usual.

Running also helps maintain and improve general health. It raises HDL (or "good") cholesterol, reduces the risk of blood clots, and encourages use of the 50% of your lungs that usually go unused. Running also boost the immune system by creating a higher concentration of lymphocytes (white blood cells that attack disease).

As you can see, the health benefits of running are many and varied. But that alone isn't all that you can reap from running regularly.
