Wikipedia~Massage

Massage is the treatment and practice of manipulation of the soft body tissues with physical, functional, i.e. mechanical, medical/therapeutic, and in some cases psychological purposes and goals. The word comes from the French massage "friction of kneading," possibly from Arabic massa "to touch, feel, handle" or from Latin massa "mass, dough". (In distinction the ancient Greek word for massage itself was anatripsis, and the Latin was friction.)

Massage involves acting and manipulating the patient's body with pressure (structured, unstructured, stationary, and/or moving), tension, motion, or vibration done manually or with mechanical aids. Target tissues may include muscles, tendons, ligaments, skin, joints, or other connective tissue, as well as lymphatic vessels, and/or organs of the gastrointestinal system. Massage can be applied with the hands, fingers, elbows, forearm, and feet. There are over eighty different massage modalities. The most cited reasons for introducing massage was patient demand and perceived clinical effectiveness.

Peer-reviewed medical research has shown that the benefits of massage include pain relief, reduced trait anxiety and depression, and temporarily reduced blood pressure, heart rate, and state anxiety. Theories behind what massage might do include blocking nociception (gate control theory), activating the parasympathetic nervous system which may stimulate the release of endorphins and serotonin, preventing fibrosis or scar tissue, increasing the flow of lymph, and improving sleep but such effects are yet to be supported by well designed clinical studies.

Massage can be performed by a professional Massage Practitioner, or by other health care professionals, such as chiropractors, osteopath, Athletic trainers, and/or physical therapists. Massage therapists work in hospitals as allied health professioners, in nursing homes, sports and fitness facilities, spas, beauty salons, cruise ships, private offices, and travel to private residences or businesses. Contraindications to massage include, deep vein thrombosis, bleeding disorders or taking blood thinners such as Warfarin, damaged blood vessels, weakened bones from cancer, osteoporosis, or fractures, and fever.

In professional settings, massage involves the client being treated while lying on a massage table, sitting upright in a massage chair, or lying on a pad on the floor. Except for modalities such as Acupressure, Shiatsu, Tui Na, Thai Massage, or Barefoot Deep Tissue, the massage subject is generally unclothed or partially unclothed, also referred to as disrobed, and their body would be "draped" with towels or sheets.

What can I expect from my massage?

Your session will begin by your therapist giving you an intake form and asking you about your reasons for getting a massage, your current physical condition, brief medical history, lifestyle and stress level, and any areas of pain.

You'll be asked to undress in private. You may also choose to stay fully clothed. Generally men completely disrobe and are given a towel to use; however, women are given a sheet and towel for cover. Then, lying down on a comfortably padded and heated massage table, you'll drape yourself with cover provided. Women who receive a massage can expect that only the part of the body being worked on will be uncovered, and your modesty respected.

You can expect a peaceful and comfortable environment for the massage. For the period of time agreed upon you'll have the unique experience of having all your muscles kneaded in a full-body massage, or only in specific areas in the case of a session oriented to localized injury, pain or tightness, or sports readiness.

In conclusion, a well-trained Massage Therapist should not only apply a variety of techniques to address your particular needs, but, exude a calm, respectful, non judgmental demeanor to allow a sense of trust to develop between client and therapist.

How much will it cost?

I prefer to do at least 75 minutes becuase I don't feel I can do an adequate massage in one hour. The standard charge for massage is $65 for 75 minutes and $75 for 90 minutes. Tips are optional. Refer to the Hourtown link Hourtown Profile

Will it hurt?

If done correctly, massage should not hurt. Some clients think massage has to hurt in order to do any good; I encourage those people to go somewhere else. I have had success working on many people with the approach that less is more. You are welcome to request more pressure, but I do not use elbows at all.

Can massage help heal my injury?

Yes, but you cannot expect instant results. Just touch alone can encourage the natural energy pathways to open and allow the body to self heal. Generally, when we experience pain and injury, the body needs to be stimulated to heal. Doing nothing is the least effective way to affect healing.

"Entrance"-
a poem by Rilke

Whovever you are: step out in to the evening
out of your living room, where everything is so known;
your house stands as the last thing before great space:
Whoever you are.
With your eyes, which in their fatigue can just barely
free themselves from the worn-out thresholds,
very slowly, lift a single black tree
and place it against the sky, slender and alone.
With this you have made the world. And it is large
and like a word that is still ripening in silence.
And, just as your will grasps their meaning,
they in turn will let go, delicately, of your eyes . . .
